Notch and Schafer to Make Psychonauts 2?

By Jeff Buckland, 2/7/2012 10:43 PM

Some weird things do happen over Twitter. When Rock Paper Shotgun mentioned that Tim Schafer only needs a few million to make Psychonauts 2 - sequel to one of the best sleeper action-adventures of the last console generation - Markus Persson, aka Notch and the creator of Minecraft, spoke up.

From how we understand it, Schafer's team Double Fine and Notch are now in talks to possibly make this game together. Yes, we might see a company who came out of pretty much nowhere in the last two years starting to publisher major games. I have my doubts as to whether Psychonauts 2 could possibly work as a AAA game at a price point anywhere above twenty bucks, but it could certainly be a huge success even without that.

And now we come to the point where the world's most successful independent developer is now possibly turning around and helping publish (or even develop?) a game that the multi-national, multi-billion-dollar, publicly-traded corporations that make games won't touch.

Of course, this could all be conjecture and it might turn into nothing, but keep this little exchange in mind when, in the future, "independent" gaming becomes just as big as, if not bigger than, traditional corporate publishing. To me, this is a case of "when", not "if".
