New Neo Geo Portable!

By Jeff Buckland, 1/25/2012 1:27 PM

Shacknews has word (originally from Japanese blog Famitsu Plaza) that SNK Playmore is delivering a new Neo Geo portable console to play their classic games on. It'll be a little bigger than an iPhone with a hybrid D-pad/analog-looking control scheme along with four face buttons, four shoulder buttons (not sure what those are fore), 4" screen, and an SD card slot. It will ship with about 19 games on-chip, mostly from the earlier generation of Neo Geo games. Click "Read More" to see a picture and get into some discussion!

I like the idea of this, but at the same time, portable emulator consoles are nowhere near new. Consoles like the Dingoo have been out for years and while their Neo Geo compatibility isn't 100%, you can also find ports of emulators for systems like the NES, SNES, Genesis, Sega Master System, and even the PlayStation 1. MAME works with a subset of (generally older, less-demanding) games, too. Of course, systems like the Dingoo are enthusiast machines that require some tech knowledge and dredging through ROM sites for the proper "versions" of ROMs just to get set up properly, so they're not for everyone. If this Neo Geo console is open enough for people to run other emulators, too, it could be a success in the emulation community!
