New Lord of the Rings Action RPG
We know this sounds like the oldest news ever, and it would be if Lord of the Rings: War in the North weren't in development by Snowblind Studios. Those guys are the action RPG makers to rule them all.
Snowblind Studios did Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance as well a The Champions of Norrath. Their success with those games led to a slew of other action RPGs; they basically revived the genre after it went into a post-Diablo II coma.
And now they're making a Lord of the Rings game for Warner Bros. that will arrive on 360s, PS3s and PCs sometime next year. Warner Bros. announced that the game will have access to both the film and novel licenses - so it will probably make obscure references to the Silmarillion, and feature the likenesses from the films.
We suspect, though, that your party will be composed of another fellowship. That's because Snowblind Studios tends to be really good at weaving narratives within existing mythologies, as they did in both Dark Alliance (Dungeons & Dragons) and Champions (Everquest). So while you and your friends may not be playing as Aragorn, Legolas, Gandalf and Gimli, you should get to play through LotR content that hasn't already been completely done to death (Aw, balrogs again, mom?).
We do know that the game will be deeply cooperative, and be playable with a fellowship of friends on or offline.
