Final Star Wars MMO Classes Announced

By Joe Dodson, 11/24/2009 1:59 AM

The Sith Inquisitor and the Jedi Consular are the last of eight classes announced for Bioware's upcoming MMORPG, Star Wars: The Old Republic.

A Bioware producer told fansite Darth Hater, "We thought as core classes the Consular and the Inquisitor made the most sense. We thought they balanced well against the other two. You can think of the Jedi Knight and the Sith Warrior as more of a melee-style Jedi, and the other two maybe more of the ranged-style Jedi. I think it made a lot of sense."

Neither of these classes are very surprising, since they seem to fill normal MMO niches (mage/priest), and they were also represented in Bioware's previous Star Wars RPG, Knights of the Old Republic. To recap, the eight playable classes in The Old Republic include Sith Inquisitor, Sith Warrior, Jedi Consular, Jedi Knight, Bounty Hunter, Trooper, Smuggler, and Imperial Agent.

It's interesting that half the classes in the game are Jedi, and it will also be interesting to see how Bioware could possibly convince you to spend your time leveling a trooper or imperial agent when you could be playing a Sith. Or, if there's pvp, how a Sith could possibly be defeated by a smuggler. While those questions vex us, it also means we'll have a lot to report on in the coming months.

There is currently no release date for The Old Republic, although it is supposed to come out sometime in 2010.
