Third Developer Added to Call of Duty
By Joe Dodson, 11/19/2009 12:26 AMThe LA Times is reporting that a third, as-yet-unnamed developer has joined Infinity Ward and Treyarch in creating Call of Duty games.
While the article mostly focuses on Modern Warfare 2's huge sales success and what it means for the industry, it does mention that "Although Infinity Ward and Treyarch have produced sequels in alternating years since 2005, the publisher now has a third development studio working on future versions."
The very next line mentions that Activision Blizzard have been researching ways to turn Call of Duty into a massively multiplayer online game, the supposition being that the third developer may be working on something of that nature.
Considering that a large part of Call of Duty's success is predicated on the RPG elements it managed to work into an online shooter's framework, such a direction makes sense for the franchise. What will be interesting to see is who takes that next step, and how. Will the third studio develop Call of Warcraft? Or will they develop filler CoD's like Treyarch, while Infinity Ward spends an extra year attempting to evolve their cash cow? Or, will the third studio and Infinity Ward both work on MMOCoD?
When we know, so will you.
