Notes: Profile is generated from recovered materials and analysis of captured video images. Eye witness accounts have been dismissed as largely fantastical and varied from witness to witness. Most details are hypothesized or extrapolated from available data.
Ground-Roving Night-capable Destructor/Light-infantry, designation 1 (GRNDL-1)
Race: Children of YMIR
Height: 3 meters (quadruped), 5 meters (biped)
Mass: 1300 kg (estimate)
Design Forerunners, Hypothesized: Jotun derivative, possible TRL (designated “Troll”) subtype
Armor plated endoskeleton
Highly resistant to projectile slugs, plasma quanta, focused light radiation
Thick armor plate: nanotech produced substance, unknown material substrate.
Shoulder actuator cuffs appear to exhibit exploitable design flaws
Rotary Shredding device, hinged door design
Rotary Shredding device, multiple head design
Tyr’s Notes: Armor plates need to be opened up during shredding attacks. This action exposes several critical areas that can be exploited. The shredding units convert biological matter into a slurry, possibly for use as nourishment
GRNDL is an anomaly amongst machines – it eats human flesh. Whether it is just to create a terrifying visage or whether it requires human flesh for sustenance isn’t known. GRNDL’s presence was only felt when it began to attack the outlying settlements of Midgard, leaving horrifically mangled corpses in its wake. The sheer power and carnage behind the attacks denied the possibility of a serial killer or purely human villain – the tracks implied something inhuman and even more horrific.
Tyr’s notes: GRNDL-1 is the newest entry in the arsenal of the Children of Ymir, optimized for maximum psychological impact on humans. This is a radically new approach for the Machines with its sudden introduction to the theatre of war. Historically, new trends appeared over many years and new iterations. The Machines’ capacity for development is minimal – indeed, if it weren’t they would have “out-evolved” our technology long ago, but their programming holds their development in check and under our control.
